Description

The specialization in business mathematics offers students of business administration, international business administration and business informatics the opportunity to place a distinct quantitative emphasis on their education. Advanced knowledge of mathematics and statistics is in demand in many business-related professions and is a prerequisite for scientific careers. Proof of 20 ECTS credits from business mathematics significantly increases the chance of admission when applying to an English-language master's program with a quantitative focus, such as Quantitative Finance.

The following content is taught as part of the Business Mathematics specialization:

  • Linear mappings and matrices, systems of equations, eigenvalues, quadratic forms, analysis of one variable, analysis of multiple variables, optimization, multiple integrals.
  • Data structures and algorithms, development, implementation and testing of programs, methods of numerical mathematics for linear and nonlinear equations, optimization.
  • Random variables and distributions, expected values, codependency, conditional expected value and martingale, models of financial mathematics in discrete time, options and derivatives.
  • Fundamentals of statistical inference, estimation, hypothesis testing. Special applications such as regression and multivariate statistics.

Admission

At the begin of the winter semester you have to take part in the entry exam (open questions and no multiple choice) and write a letter of motivation. In addition, the grades of mathematics and statistics will also be part of the decision making process.

Structure

Winter semester (1. Semester)

  • Analysis and Linear Algebra
  • Computing

Summer semester (2. Semester)

  • Probability
  • Statistics

Bachelor thesis

We offer various topics in and around the field of business mathematics. Please contact your preferrde lecturer directly to discuss a topic.

Job Profile

Graduates of the business mathematics specialization can work professionally in many areas, especially if a master's program with a quantitative focus is studied after the bachelor's degree. They are qualified to solve analysis and optimization problems independently. Possible fields of activity are

  • the scientific community
  • the public sector, such as research institutions,
  • insurance companies, research departments of banks, financial analysis or marketing research

Erfahrungsbericht

  6. Wenn man nachher Q-Fin. machen möchte, dann ist WiMath the way to go.
