This specialization offers you a comprehensive presentation of the socioeconomics of health and social policies, of challenges, current policies and options for future directions.

If you are interested in health and social policies, then this specialization is a match. The specialization links theory with real world problems. 

This specialization is highly interactive so you need to be prepared for every course to contribute to class discussions and to work in teams. 

Structure:

This specialization offers 5 courses: 

• Course 1: Introduction to Health and Social Policy
• Course 2: Economics and Policy of the Public Healthcare Industry
• Course 3: Economics and Policy of the Private Healthcare Industry
• Course 4: International and Transnational Social Policy
•  Course 5: Social Policy Evaluation 

Access to Specialization:

This specialization starts each semester with up to 30 students. 

First of all, you have to register at the course “Access to the Specialization: Health & Social Policy”. Afterwards you need to upload a motivational letter (300-500 words). In this letter you should outline why you are applying to the specialization. Furthermore, you should discuss a current issue in health and social policy or future challenges that we might have to face.

Erfahrungsbericht:

Letztes Semester wurden in der neuen Spezialisierung Health and Social Policy erstmals die Kurse 1-3 angeboten. Im ersten Kurs geht es darum, einen generellen Überblick zu bekommen. Es zwar ungefähr nach der ersten Vorlesungshälfte ein kleines Quiz, aber wenn man sich kurz mit der Literatur beschäftigt, ist das absolut machbar. Ansonsten wird viel Wert auf die Mitarbeit gelegt und man soll sich ein bisschen mit den Themen, die behandelt werden, auseinandersetzen. Daher muss man einmal ein Response Paper schreiben, und man soll in einer Gruppe ein Visual Essay erstellen. Im zweiten und dritten Kurs (Economics and Policy of the Private/Public Healthcare Industry) sind die Leistungstatbestände nicht mehr ganz so außergewöhnlich. Die Mitarbeit zählt imm noch, aber sonst gibt es nach jeweils zwei Vorlesungen ein Quiz über den erarbeitenten Stoff. Man sollte sich davor also ein bisschen mit den Foliensätzen auseinandersetzen. Beim letzten Quiz wird die Fragenanzahl verdoppelt und es kommen ein paar Rechenbeispiele, die davor in den Stunden durchgemacht wurden. Es werden interessante Themen, von dem generellen Aufbau von Welfare States zu Pension Policy, Physicians and Hospitals, Epdiemiology, Regulation of Unhealthy Good und Behavioural Helath Economics, behandelt. Generell hatte ich das Gefühl, dass sehr viel Wert auf den Dialog mit den Studierenden gelegt wurde.
